Don McLean – Vincent (Leaping Ahead #240)

Leaping Ahead Project 2016 #240: 160827

[A song from my teenage years]

Released in May 1971 this is a tribute to Vincent van Gogh, also known by its opening line, “Starry Starry Night”. It’s a reference to Van Gogh’s painting ‘The Starry Night’, but the song also describes different paintings done by the artist. It was created on the 100th anniversary of the midpoint of Van Gogh’s life. Van Gogh – the man who loved the sun – is also one of my all-time favourite artists.

Pink Floyd – Time (Leaping Ahead #238)

Leaping Ahead Project 2016 #238: 160825

[Song about time]

Track 4 from the 1973 album ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ and the only song on the album credited to all four members of the band (although the lyrics were written by Roger Waters). The song is about how time can slip by, but many people do not realise it until it is too late. Roger Waters got the idea when he realised he was no longer preparing for anything in life, but was right in the middle of it. It’s noted for its long introductory passage of clocks chiming and alarms ringing, recorded as a quadrophonic test by Alan Parsons but actually not specifically for the album.
