Cozy Powell

Cozy Powell (b. Colin Flooks) was a drummer for The Jeff Beck Group, Rainbow, Whitesnake and Black Sabbath. However, in 1974-75 he also enjoyed reasonable success as a solo artist with a self-formed band of session players aptly called ‘Cozy Powell’s Hammer’. Na Na Na was the best-selling UK single, reaching No. 10 when released in 1974.

Cozy Powell’s Hammer included Bernie Marsden (guitar), Clive Chaman (bass), Don Airey (keys) and Frank Aiello (vocals). Cozy Powell passed away aged just 51 following a car crash in 1998.

  1. This guy was a legend. I met Cozy after a gig in Aberdeen in the early 90’s. Great bloke, legendary Rocker and one of the true great drummers. RIP Colin.

  2. Impressed that you actually met the guy. I still remember buying ‘Na Na Na’ when it came out in 1974. 40 years later and it’s still on my iPod. Says something about the man. As you say RIP Colin.

  3. During my conversation with him all I could think off was that I was talking to the man who played drums on Rainbow Rising and Slide It In. I still have the tour poster from that night. It is a prize possession of mine.
